Links, which are URLs (Uniform Resource Locators), are the workhorses of Search Engine Optimization, marketing, organic traffic; any which way you look at it, the links you have coming into your web site are critical. Not only do you need links to your pages, you need "quality" links from respected authority sites.
A URL is a unique address for a particular online document. Most people think of their URL and their website as the same thing, and actually, most links coming into your website do link to your home page.
Search engines favor some URLs over others: text is best. Some codes, like asp, have question marks in their URLs, which confuses a lot of bots. They may not "follow" the URL and index your page…(sigh).
When doing optimization, it is also important to know the difference between optimizing your site verses optimizing your pages: you want to optimize pages, having a few select keywords per page. Deep links, or links that connect to other pages besides your home page, are quite valuable. Have you ever done a Google search and found an organic result (the results in the middle of the page, not the ads) that lists several results within the same web site? That is an example of good deep-linking.
You may not ever have a site of that size, but you can definitely have different pages with valuable links pointing to them. And you will have visitors coming to your pages over and over. Your link building program can eventually take on some of its own momentum when relevant sites begin to link to you.
Definitely link to quality sites; don’t be paranoid about letting visitors"leave’ your site. Give your visitors value, always, and if it means sharing something good,…unless you have absolutely no incoming links, DO IT!
There are several options for link building:
- Natural links
- Buying links
- Reciprocal linking
- Link exchanges
