Internal Linking Power Tips

When linking, don’t underestimate you own internal links; first and foremost the goal is a satisfied visitor.  And a page with a good navigation system that helps robots index content and deliver relevant query results and helps the user find what they want is the best of both worlds.manonpcclipart

First, common sense:  have you ever been on a site that has text you tried to click, only to find it was not a hyperlink, and you really wanted to learn more?   That is a  good example of not-so-good tactics.  Some webmasters are so fearful of a visitor "leaving the page" that they refuse to make links when they are obviously a good idea; they often damage their own usefulness in the process.

Along the same lines, take the time to link the obvious:  make use of the navigation and footer areas to provide links to important areas.  Be sure to optimize your website for Google.

About "no-follows":  Using no-follow tags can prevent the dilution of key pages; for example,  if you have a sales page linking to an order page, instructing bots not to index the order page makes sense.  Adding "no-follow" when the linked pages are content rich does not make sense however.

Link Building should only be seriously undertaken after researching keywords to determine where your efforts will be the most rewarding.  Read our article about Google’s new keyword research tool.
